In this process heavy deposits of chromium (sometimes many thousandths of an inch) are deposited directly on the base metal. Chromium is extremely hard and is used to increase wear resistance on things like shafts and bearing surfaces. Hard Chrome plating is also used to buildup worn or mismachined parts.
